# KOL Meaning, KOC and UGC: What They Are and How Brands Use Them

Three terms Malaysian brand teams meet in every creator brief, explained in plain words, with how each one is used and measured. By [shakalakaa team](https://shakalakaa.my/about/editorial)Published 07 October 2026 · Updated 09 October 2026 Quick answer

A KOL (key opinion leader) is a creator or expert whose recommendation shapes what a large audience buys. A KOC (key opinion consumer) is a real customer with a small, trusting following. UGC (user-generated content) is content made by customers or creators, often run as ads.

## KOL meaning in marketing

KOL stands for key opinion leader. In marketing it means a person whose opinion on a topic carries weight with a large audience: a beauty creator, a doctor who posts, a tech reviewer or a celebrity.

The term came into wide use in Chinese-language marketing and is now standard across Malaysia, on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Xiaohongshu. When people ask what is KOL, they usually mean the paid version: a brand pays the KOL to feature a product.

## KOC meaning

KOC stands for key opinion consumer. A KOC is a real user of the product with a smaller following, often a few thousand people, who trusts their reviews because they read as a customer's view rather than an advert.

KOCs are usually briefed in larger numbers. One KOL post reaches many people once; fifty KOC posts reach fewer people each, but more of them see the product recommended by someone like them.

## KOL vs KOC

| | KOL | KOC |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Creator or expert with a large audience | Real customer with a small, trusting audience |
| Best for | Reach and launches | Trust, reviews and repeat mentions |
| Typical brief | A few creators, high production | Many creators, simple content |
| Measure by | Sales or bookings from the campaign | Sales, codes and review volume |

## UGC meaning

UGC stands for user-generated content: photos, videos and reviews made by customers or creators rather than by the brand's own team. What is UGC content in practice? A customer's unboxing video, a review on Shopee, or a creator's short demo the brand is allowed to reuse.

Many brands now pay creators to make UGC-style videos for ads. The content is not posted on the creator's own account; the brand runs it as its own ad because it looks native to TikTok and Instagram.

## How brands use KOLs, KOCs and UGC together

Most programmes use all three. KOLs open a launch, KOCs keep the product recommended week after week, and the best-performing creator videos become UGC ads with paid budget behind them.

On TikTok Shop the same idea runs through [affiliates and live commerce](https://shakalakaa.my/services/live-commerce): creators earn a commission on what they sell. In our published Malaysian work, more than 3,400 creator affiliates took Swiss Thomas's monthly GMV up 6.2×. More detail on the results

All figures are as published in our Malaysian case studies. [Swiss Thomas](https://shakalakaa.my/case-studies/tiktok-shop-home-appliances-malaysia): 3,400+ creator affiliates, monthly TikTok Shop GMV up 6.2×. RaeLele: 2,100+ creator affiliates, GMV up 5.4×.

[MANSPOT](https://shakalakaa.my/case-studies/tiktok-shop-mens-grooming-malaysia): 1,450+ creator affiliates, GMV up 4.7×. CoreBody Asia, a Petaling Jaya studio, used 28 micro-KOLs to take trial bookings from 42 to 198 a month.

## What to measure

Reach and views show that people saw the content. They do not show whether it worked. Ask for sales, bookings, cost per order or affiliate GMV, and for which creators drove them.

### Measuring ROI

Influencer ROI is the revenue the campaign can be tied to, minus its full cost (creator fees, product and any paid amplification), divided by that cost. Tie revenue to creators with affiliate links, discount codes or TikTok Shop affiliate data, and compare the cost per order with your paid ads.

Before a campaign, agree who owns the content and for how long the brand may reuse it in ads.
