CIDB Contractor Check Malaysia.

Check a CIDB registration number on CIDB's own Carian Kontraktor (contractor search), which is linked from the cidb.gov.my homepage and opens without a login. It shows whether the firm's registration is valid or expired, its grade and its certificates.

1. Open the CIDB Carian Kontraktor search↗ (opens in a new tab) on CIDB's CIMS system.
2. Enter the number in No. Pendaftaran CIDB (CIDB registration number). You can also search by Nama Kontraktor (contractor name) or No. Pendaftaran Perniagaan (SSM business registration number).
3. Keep Jenis on Local for a Malaysian firm, and set Validity to All. The search shows only valid registrations by default, so an expired firm would otherwise simply not appear.
4. Click Carian (search). Each result lists the contractor name, grade, state and district, with columns for its PPK, SPKK and STB certificates.
5. Check that the name matches the quotation exactly, the grade covers the contract value in the table below, and the category (Building, Civil Engineering, Mechanical & Electrical, or Facility Management) matches the work.

The grade is a ceiling on contract value. CIDB's contractor registration terms↗ (opens in a new tab) say a contractor cannot take on a project above the value set for its grade, or outside its registration category, and cannot tender or carry out construction work once its certificate expires until it is renewed.

SPKK (Sijil Perolehan Kerja Kerajaan) is a separate certificate for government construction procurement, and CIDB requires a firm to hold a PPK before applying for it. A private client is checking the PPK.

The Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) is the statutory body established under the Construction Industry Development Board Act 1994 (Act 520) to register, regulate and develop the Malaysian construction industry. Every contractor undertaking construction or renovation work in Malaysia beyond specified thresholds must hold current CIDB registration (Perakuan Pendaftaran Kontraktor — PPK) at the appropriate grade and specialisation head.

For a homeowner commissioning a renovation, or a developer building a subcontractor panel for a project, running Semak CIDB is not a formality — it is the commissioning precondition for the work to be legally undertaken and for downstream insurance, warranty and payment-adjudication rights to attach properly.

The consequences of commissioning work

The consequences of commissioning work from an unregistered or expired-registration contractor apply to both sides. The contractor is exposed under Act 520 to enforcement action for undertaking scheduled construction work without registration.

The commissioning party (homeowner, developer, main contractor) loses ready access to Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act 2012 (CIPAA) dispute-resolution routes that depend on the parties' registration status, and typically finds insurance-claim, defect-liability and warranty enforcement significantly harder to pursue against an unregistered counterparty.

A legitimate CIDB registered contractor treats the registration as a competitive credential and displays the number, grade and specialisation head prominently on its site and quotation documents — a firm that avoids the question is a firm to check twice.

Open the Semak CIDB search on cidb.gov.my and enter the contractor's firm name, CIDB registration number, or SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia — Companies Commission of Malaysia) registration number. A currently-registered PPK returns the firm's registration number, grade (G1 through G7), specialisation head, category (bumiputera / non-bumiputera / joint), status and expiry date.

Compare the returned entry against what the firm has represented on its quotation and marketing materials:

• the name should match exactly (a related company or subsidiary is not the same registration),
• the grade should cover the intended project value,
• the specialisation head should match the scope of work (residential building, civil, mechanical and electrical, etc.),
• and the expiry should be well past the expected project completion date.

A "CIDB registered" firm whose Semak CIDB search returns no row, an expired status, or a specialisation head mismatched to the project is not authorised to undertake the works.

CIDB grades a registered contractor into seven tiers reflecting financial capacity, past-project experience and technical capability.

G1 is the entry tier, suitable for the smallest project values; G7 is the top tier with no upper project-value limit and is reserved for firms with the largest capital, experience and personnel base.

For a residential renovation or interior fit-out commissioned by a homeowner, G1 through G3 contractors are the typical bracket; for a commercial fit-out, larger residential development or infrastructure project the required grade rises accordingly.

Ringgit thresholds for each grade

Each grade carries paid-up capital, past-project value evidence, financial statement audit and technical-personnel requirements that the contractor must evidence at initial registration and again at each renewal cycle.

CIDB operates three registration classes under Act 520 and confusing them is a common commissioning mistake. Perakuan Pendaftaran Kontraktor (PPK) is the firm-level contractor registration — this is what Semak CIDB returns and what a renovation homeowner is checking.

Sijil Perolehan Kerja Kerajaan (SPKK) is the certificate a contractor needs to bid for government procurement work; CIDB issues it only to firms that already hold a PPK.

Personel binaan (construction personnel) is the individual-level registration for site tradespeople and skilled construction personnel; a firm's site personnel should carry personel binaan cards under Act 520's competency framework.

• For a homeowner commissioning renovation the PPK check via Semak CIDB is the primary;
• for a larger project the developer or main contractor also runs SPK;
• for site-level scrutiny the tradespeople's personel binaan cards are the third register.

CIDB PPK registration operates on a renewal cycle CIDB publishes for each grade; a registered contractor must submit renewal evidence before the current registration lapses, including current paid-up capital evidence, current audited financial statements, current past-project value evidence, current technical personnel qualifications, and current insurance coverage.

A lapsed PPK removes the firm from Semak CIDB search results and voids the firm's authority to undertake construction work under Act 520 until the renewal is completed.

The safest habit

For a homeowner commissioning residential renovation, checking that Semak CIDB shows a current status with an expiry comfortably past the expected project completion date is the safest habit; a contractor whose registration expires mid-project is a project-continuity risk in addition to a regulatory risk.

Where the firm holds a specialisation head suited to the scope (e.g. residential building for renovation, or a specific mechanical/electrical specialisation for MEP works) the check is against both PPK and the specific specialisation head — a firm registered for civil works only is not authorised for MEP scope, and vice versa.
