AI Overview Watch Malaysia.

A dated, methodology-first record of AI Overview presence in Malaysian commercial search — 1 month recorded, growing monthly.

Quick answer: This tracks whether an AI Overview appears above Malaysian commercial search results and cites shakalakaa, starting at 25 real queries this month. Query intent is directly measured and real; AI Overview presence is honestly unknown for 24 of 25 rows, since we can't yet render a real Google Malaysia results page.

Why this exists

A direct Malaysian competitor (ZenWeb) publishes its own claim of monitoring an AI Overview across 210 Malaysian keywords, and states plainly that where an Overview appears, click-through drops and being the cited source matters more than ranking first. That is a real, citable competitive signal — and nobody has published local data on it before. shakalakaa is better placed to own this question than to keep losing it: an AI-visibility harness already exists (see the AI Visibility Report), a monthly-series discipline already exists (see the Ad Cost Ticker), and an open-data, CC BY posture already exists across this site.

We start at 25 queries, not 210. A small, honestly-measured sample beats a large claimed one — the same call v42 made building the ad-benchmark series from one real month rather than backfilling an invented history.

Methodology — what's measured, and how confidently

Two genuinely different measurements live in this dataset, and they carry different confidence levels on purpose:

  • Query intent (commercial / informational-adjacent / misattributed) — directly observable from a web search: reading what a query's real result set actually serves. This is real, load-bearing data — it already changed how 4 queries are priced in this site's own keyword-demand register this month.
  • AI Overview presencenot directly observable the same way. Confirming whether Google's AI-generated summary appears for a query requires rendering a real, region-localised google.com.my results page; the tooling available when this month's data was collected cannot do that. Recorded unknown rather than guessed, for every query except one, where a competitor's own published claim is cited as secondhand evidence and marked as such — not an independent observation.

The real fix for the second measurement is roughly an hour of manual google.com.my browsing, logged as an [S-ACTION] in this project's blocked-items register. Until that hour happens, this page states the limitation plainly rather than quietly upgrading a guess into a data point.

This month's numbers

Of the 25 queries tracked this month: 11 commercial, 9 informational-adjacent, 4 misattributed, and 1 unclassifiable from this session's method. AI Overview presence: 1 of 25 rows carries secondhand evidence it appears (and does not cite shakalakaa); 24 are honestly unknown. Full row-level data is published at the JSON view and in data/serp-features/2026-08-MY-top10.md.

Trend reporting

This is the first month recorded. Per the same discipline as the ad-cost ticker, real month-over-month trend reporting begins once 3+ monthly files exist — a single point is a snapshot, not a trend, and we say so rather than plotting a line through it.
