What do you need before you run Meta ads in Malaysia?
Last updated: October 2026. Last checked: 19 October 2026 against the Meta Business Help Centre. You need a business portfolio, a Facebook Page (and an Instagram account for Instagram placements), an ad account with a payment method, and website tracking.
| Item | What it does | Meta's rule |
|---|---|---|
| Business portfolio | Holds your Pages, Instagram accounts and ad accounts in one place | The name should match your business's public name; one person can create up to 2 portfolios (Meta (opens in a new tab)) |
| Facebook Page / Instagram account | The identity your ads run from | Added to the portfolio as business assets |
| Ad account | Where campaigns, budgets and billing sit | New accounts may not have every advertising feature straight away |
| Meta Pixel and Conversions API | Record what people do on your site after they see an ad | Never send health, financial or children's data (Meta (opens in a new tab)) |
How do you set up a Meta ads campaign step by step?
- Create a business portfolio at business.facebook.com with your business email.
- Add your Facebook Page, Instagram account and ad account, and give your team access.
- Install the Meta Pixel and, if you can, the Conversions API.
- In Ads Manager, create a campaign and choose its objective: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion or Sales.
- Set the ad set budget (daily or lifetime), schedule, audience, placements and conversion location.
- Add your creative, copy and destination link.
- Publish; delivery starts once the ad passes review.
- After a few days, compare cost per result by ad set and creative, and move budget to what works.
Which Meta campaign objective should you choose?
Choose the objective that matches the action you want, because Meta optimises delivery towards it. Meta's Ads Manager has six objectives (Meta Business Help Centre (opens in a new tab)).
| Objective | Use it when you want |
|---|---|
| Awareness | People to see and remember your ad |
| Traffic | Visits to a website, app or chat |
| Engagement | Messages, video views or Page actions |
| Leads | Sign-ups, calls or messages from interested people |
| App promotion | App installs or in-app actions |
| Sales | Purchases, including catalogue sales |
How much budget do Meta ads need in Malaysia?
Meta sets a minimum budget per ad set, and the figure varies by country, currency, objective and bid strategy, so Ads Manager shows an alert when yours is too low (Meta (opens in a new tab)).
What you pay depends on the auction: audience, season and creative. On shakalakaa's Malaysian ad benchmarks, Meta CPM for general SME campaigns runs about RM8–25. Our Facebook ads cost guide breaks this down by industry.
How do you track results from Meta ads?
Track results with the Meta Pixel on your site and the Conversions API from your server or CRM. The Conversions API sends events directly, so they are less affected by ad blockers and browser errors (Meta (opens in a new tab)).
Clinics and finance brands should check event names and URLs: Meta prohibits sending health, financial or children's data. Our Conversions API guide covers the setup.
How long does Meta ad review take?
Most ads are reviewed within 24 hours, though some take longer, and Meta can review an ad again after it goes live (Meta (opens in a new tab)). Editing a running ad starts a new review.
Need it done for you?
If your team would rather not build and optimise campaigns in-house, shakalakaa's Meta Ads service sets up the portfolio, tracking and campaigns and reports on cost per lead or sale.
