llms.txt Explained: The One File Most Malaysian Sites Are Missing

Googlebot crawls and indexes an entire site by design, so it never needed a curated shortlist of your best pages. An AI crawler benefits from exactly that shortlist — and most Malaysian sites haven't built one yet.

Quick answer: llms.txt is a plain-text file at your site's root that curates and points AI crawlers to your most important, citable pages, formatted for AI consumption rather than human browsing. Unlike robots.txt, it doesn't block or allow crawling — it's a discovery aid. Our own llms.txt lists 21 services as a live example.

What llms.txt actually is

llms.txt is a plain-text file, conventionally placed at your site's root (yoursite.com/llms.txt), listing and briefly describing the pages an AI model should treat as most authoritative and citable for your business — your key service pages, your published data, your most useful guides. It's written in a simple, structured Markdown-style format designed to be efficiently parsed by an AI system, not styled for a human visitor browsing your site.

How it differs from robots.txt and a sitemap

robots.txt controls access — which crawlers are allowed to fetch which paths. A sitemap.xml lists every indexable URL on your site, structured for a search engine's crawl scheduler. llms.txt does neither of those jobs: it doesn't block or permit anything, and it isn't a complete URL list. It's a curated shortlist and description layer, telling an AI system "if you're going to cite three or four pages from this site, start here" — a job neither robots.txt nor a sitemap was ever designed to do.

Why most Malaysian business sites don't have one

llms.txt is a genuinely new file format, standardised only recently relative to how long robots.txt and sitemap.xml have existed — most site builders, CMS platforms and agencies in this market simply haven't caught up to including it as standard practice yet. That gap is exactly why it's currently high-leverage: a site that builds one now is doing something the large majority of competing local sites in most categories aren't doing.

What actually belongs in it

Your most commercially important service and product pages, any genuinely citable primary data you publish (benchmark figures, an original dataset, published methodology), and a handful of high-value guides or resources — not every page on your site. A bloated llms.txt listing everything defeats the purpose of curation, since the whole value is signalling "these specific pages matter most," not replicating your sitemap in a different format.

Building one for your own site

Our free llms.txt generator builds the file from your site's actual page structure without a sales call gate, and the AI visibility checker scores whether AI crawlers can currently access your site at all — worth running before building an llms.txt file, since a curated shortlist to pages an AI crawler is blocked from reaching accomplishes nothing.

What we do differently in client accounts

llms.txt is one line item inside the broader GEO layer we scope on top of an existing SEO retainer — we build and keep it current as pages change, rather than generating it once and letting it drift out of date as a site's most important pages shift over time.
