How to choose an interior design firm — and verify it yourself
Two mechanical checks any homeowner can do before signing a contract. First, SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia / Companies Commission of Malaysia) company registration — every legitimate ID firm in Malaysia is registered, and the SSM record is publicly searchable via MyDataSSM. A firm operating without SSM registration is operating outside the basic company-law framework the rest of your consumer protection depends on. Second, MIID (Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers) membership — where a firm claims it, the claim is verifiable against MIID's public register. Not every good firm is an MIID member (membership isn't compulsory), but a firm that claims MIID membership and doesn't appear in the register is misrepresenting.
Beyond verification, the harder question is scope, fee structure and quote comparability — three variables that make two "similar" quotes not actually comparable line-for-line. See our interior design cost guide for how to read a Malaysian ID quote without being blindsided by a blended package price.
Fee structures — design-only, %-of-build, and design-and-build
ID firms in Malaysia charge in three broad structures: (a) a flat design fee where the firm charges for design and 3D visualisation and the client procures build separately; (b) a percentage of build cost, typically negotiated at the outset; and (c) a design-and-build package where one firm handles both. Each structure has different incentives on line-item transparency — see the linked cost guide for the full breakdown. The verification question this directory addresses is separate: which firms exist as legitimate registered entities before you get into fee-structure negotiation.
Model your own project economics through the renovation quote-to-close calculator and, on the ID-firm side, the renovation lead calculator — the two calculators that connect a homeowner's quote to an ID firm's actual lead-economics reality.

Verified list ships with S's populated data. Interior design firms operating in Kuala Lumpur that hold SSM registration (and MIID membership where claimed) and wish to appear here can submit their details via the contact form for verification. Penang — verified interior design firms
Verified list ships with S's populated data. Same inclusion criterion. Firms submit for verification via the contact form.
Disclosure and methodology
Any firm listed here that is or has been a shakalakaa client is labelled inline in that firm's entry — the source of truth is data/directory-disclosures.json in the site repo, versioned alongside the page. The directory is edited only by manual, cross-checked addition; there is no automated ingest of a third-party database.
