How to choose an interior design firm — and verify it yourself
Two mechanical checks any homeowner can do before signing a contract. First, SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia / Companies Commission of Malaysia) company registration — every legitimate ID firm in Malaysia is registered, and the SSM record is publicly searchable via MyDataSSM. A firm operating without SSM registration is operating outside the basic company-law framework the rest of your consumer protection depends on. Second, MIID (Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers) membership — where a firm claims it, the claim is verifiable against MIID's public register. Not every good firm is an MIID member (membership isn't compulsory), but a firm that claims MIID membership and doesn't appear in the register is misrepresenting.

LAM (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia) — the third verification hook, where it applies
LAM (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia / Board of Architects Malaysia) is the statutory body constituted under the Architects Act 1967. Its remit is architects, but the same Act's amended framework recognises a separate registration class for interior designers who choose to register with LAM. Not every ID firm registers with LAM — registration is not compulsory for interior design practice — but a firm that claims LAM registration is claiming a specific statutory status that is verifiable against LAM's public register at lam.gov.my. If a firm claims it and doesn't appear on the register, that is the same category of misrepresentation as an unverifiable MIID claim.
The practical order for a homeowner: SSM first (any ID firm at all), MIID second (professional-body membership where claimed), LAM third (statutory registration where claimed). Two of the three must be verifiable for the firm to be listed here; a firm that clears only SSM without claiming either professional-body affiliation is not automatically excluded, but the entry states that plainly. Where a firm's LAM registration number is submitted, we cross-check it against the public register and record the check date in the entry.

ID firms in Malaysia charge in three broad structures: (a) a flat design fee where the firm charges for design and 3D visualisation and the client procures build separately; (b) a percentage of build cost, typically negotiated at the outset; and (c) a design-and-build package where one firm handles both.
