Three tiers, three very different deliverables
"Social media marketing" gets quoted as one number when it's actually three distinct service tiers with different deliverables and different price floors. Confusing them is how businesses end up either overpaying for posting-only content or underpaying for what's advertised as "full management" but is actually just a content calendar.
RM ranges by scope (Malaysia, 2026)
| Scope | Typical monthly fee | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Posting-only | RM800–2,500 | Content calendar, scheduled posts, basic engagement — no paid ad management, no strategy work |
| Managed ads | RM1,500–5,000 | Meta and/or TikTok ad account management, creative testing, conversion tracking — ad spend billed separately |
| Full-funnel programme | RM3,000–8,000+ | Multi-platform (Meta, TikTok, XHS) strategy, content production, paid management, tracking and monthly reporting as one connected system |

What's actually inside an SMM retainer
- Strategy & content calendar — what gets posted, where, and why, tied to a goal rather than a quota of posts per week.
- Creative production — photography, video and copywriting built for how each platform's algorithm actually favours content, not one asset reused everywhere.
- Paid management (where in scope) — audience targeting, budget allocation and daily optimisation across Meta, TikTok and, increasingly, XHS for brands reaching Malaysia's Chinese-speaking consumers.
- Tracking & reporting — Pixel/CAPI, WhatsApp-tap conversion tracking and monthly performance reporting against cost-per-lead, not vanity reach numbers.
Red flags in cheap packages
A package priced well under RM800/month with "unlimited posts" and "guaranteed followers" is a template-content mill, not a marketing programme — it produces activity, not outcomes. Watch for: no ad-spend-vs-fee separation in the quote (a blended number hides which part you're actually paying for — see our agency red flags guide), follower-count guarantees (a vanity metric that doesn't correlate with leads), and zero mention of conversion tracking (if nobody can tell you your cost per lead, the campaign isn't being measured against anything real).
When NOT to hire an agency
If your monthly marketing budget genuinely can't support the RM1,500+ floor for a managed-ads retainer on top of ad spend, an agency isn't the right fit yet — a founder posting consistently and honestly for six months, then reinvesting early revenue into a proper retainer, often beats a stretched RM500/month package that produces neither good content nor real ad management.
Where this fits in the wider budget
